BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) – The cabinet endorsed the Civil Partnership Bill which sets same-sex marriage conditions similar to those of different-sex marriages and will reach the parliament soon, according to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam.
Mr Wissanu said that the Justice Ministry proposed to the cabinet the bill that was based on the opinions of representatives of educational institutions, organizations concerned and religious leaders.
The Civil Partnership Bill was separated from the Civil and Commercial Code for clear legal terms.
Under the bill, same-sex couples are identified as life partners unlike the status of different-sex couples. Besides, life partners must be 17 years old or over and need consent from their parents.
Their rights will be similar to those of different-sex couples including government welfare and the rights to share marriage property and to divorce.
Same-sex couples’ rights to financial transactions will be similar to those of different-sex couples but they will be subject to some different conditions.
Mr Wissanu said the bill would reach the House of Representatives in the present parliamentary session but he was not sure if it would be imposed within the tenure of this government. (TNA)
