KANCHANABURI, Feb 5 (TNA) – Thailand has cut power to several Myanmar border towns in a crackdown on online scam operations.
Authorities in Kanchanaburi province cut power to Payathonzu, while in Chiang Rai province, the power supply to Tachileik was also severed. Thailand will also suspend fuel supplies to the affected areas.
The power cuts, implemented near border crossings like the Three Pagodas Pass, are a direct response to the proliferation of Chinese-operated online scam centers operating in these areas. These centers have relied on the stable power and internet infrastructure provided.
Following the power cut in Payathonzu, a surge of Myanmar residents crossed into Thailand to stockpile essential goods like fuel and food.
Tachileik Switches to Lao Power After Thailand Cutoff
Following Thailand’s recent power cut to Tachileik, Myanmar, the city is transitioning to electricity provided by Laos.
As of February 5, approximately 50% of Tachileik’s power supply has been switched to the Lao grid. The remaining 50% is still in the process of being converted.
Authorities anticipate that the full transition to Lao electricity will be completed within today or the next couple of days. This will allow Tachileik to fully rely on Laos for its power needs. -819 (TNA)
