BEIJING, Oct 18 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressing their mutual commitment to elevating Thai-Russian relations to new heights.
The discussions also highlighted the intention to strengthen cooperation across all dimensions, with a particular focus on the tourism industry.
Both leaders met at 6:00 PM local time in Beijing (one hour ahead of Thailand) on October 17. The discussion took place at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
Prime Minister Srettha expressed his delight at the opportunity to meet with President Putin on this occasion, considering it a valuable opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to elevating Thai-Russian relations to a closer level. Both countries have a longstanding diplomatic relationship, having recently celebrated the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
President Putin praised the long-standing, close relationship between Thailand and Russia and emphasized the need to further enhance cooperation, particularly in areas of culture and tourism. Both countries share a strong people-to-people connection, and in 2024, there will be a year of cultural and tourism exchanges between Thailand and Russia.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Srettha mentioned that over one million Russian tourists visit Thailand, demonstrating the deep cultural ties. He also shared that during the Cabinet meeting on October 16, there was a decision to extend the stay duration for Russian citizens from 30 days to 90 days.
On the economic front, it was mutually acknowledged that there is room to expand trade facilitation between the two nations. The Thai Prime Minister encouraged Russia to promote agricultural trade and invited them to consider increasing their investments in Thailand.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Srettha invited President Putin to visit Thailand, and President Putin expressed his readiness to determine a suitable date for the visit in the near future. (TNA)
