BANGKOK, Aug 22 (TNA) – The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry vowed to solve plastic waste problem, considered as the national agenda and to work with ASEAN countries to tackle ocean waste.
The minister, Varawut Silpa-archa said about tackling ocean waste and plastic waste that floating booms would be installed at 400 locations of river mouths to trap plastic waste before flowing into the sea.
The installation has been completed 50 per cent and the ministry is cooperating with the private sector to finish the task soon.
It also asked for cooperation from tourism and fishery sectors to carry waste, generated during sea trips back on land.
In the international level, it will also join hands with ASEAN countries to tackle ocean waste seriously.
Speaking about the government’s plan to phase out single-use plastics, plastic straws and cups and Styrofoam food containers by 2022, he said the ban should be implemented sooner in 2020-2021.
The ministry will find affordable and suitable materials to replace single-use plastics, he added. (TNA)
