BANGKOK, may 22 (TNA) – Fifteen Japanese nationals have
been arrested in Thailand for running a call centre scam and they will be deported to Japan on Friday.
The group of scammers was rounded up weeks ago after luring
over 200 million yen from Japanese victims. They allegedly ran a phone scam targeting
mostly elderly people in Japan by using extortion tactic.
Police found dozens of internet telephones, other equipment
and documents written in Japanese.
This criminal gang had caused 200 million yen or about 70
million baht in damage, said acting Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt Gen Sompon
Chingduang.
When finding victims living alone they would send their gang
members to rob them at their houses, he said.
Thai police planned to hand over the suspects to Japanese
authorities on Friday to face charges in Japan.
According to Japanese media, Japanese phone scam gangs have
been on the rise using Southeast Asian countries as their operation base.(TNA)
