BANGKOK, March 26 (TNA) — Thailand ranks 51st in the World Economic Forum’s Global Energy Transitions Index 2019, three positions upward compared with its 54th position last year.
Energy Minister Siri Jirapongphan announced the ranking and said the higher position resulted from the country’s efficiency in developing energy security and ensuring people’s access to energy, support for economic development and environmental conservation.
According to the minister, the Global Energy Transitions Index covered 115 countries. In Southeast Asia, Thailand ranks 3rd after Singapore which ranks 13th and Malaysia 31st globally.
Thailand was praised for its progress in renewable energy which will form 35% of its overall energy in the next 20 years, up from 14% at present. Besides, it allowed people to contribute up to 10,000 megawatts of energy to the national energy system through solar rooftops.
However, Mr Siri said Thailand still lacked personnel in the field of renewable energy.
Wuttikorn Stithit, PTT PCL’s executive vice president for natural gas supply and trading, said the company played its roles in supporting national energy security by expanding its natural gas pipelines locally and importing liquefied natural gas. (TNA)
