BANGKOK, Jan 17 (TNA) – Contractors of the three main railway projects in Bangkok have suspended some construction works, which generate dust until next Tuesday.
Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), Pakapong Sirikantaramas said his agency instructed the contractors of the Orange, Pink and Yellow lines to stop some building works temporarily to reduce dust on Ram Intra, Chaeng Watthana, Srinakarin, Lat Phrao and Ramkhamhaeng Roads.
In an attempt to control dust from all electric railway construction projects in the capital, the MRTA also told the contractors to increase the frequency of cleaning and road washing. Trucks and building materials must be covered to prevent dust spreading.
The activities that cause traffic congestion are restricted and construction work, which needs closure of traffic lanes have been accelerated to reopen traffic lanes in order to relieve traffic congestion.
Chayaphon Thitisak, the director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said the level of the PM 2.5 particulate matter on Thursday morning exceeded the safety standard in four provinces –Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathom, according to the Pollution Control Department.
Local authorities will keep monitoring the situation closely. People in affected areas are asked to use public transport and refrain from open burning of garbage and agricultural waste. (TNA)
