BANGKOK, Dec 25 (TNA) – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will subsidize high-speed internet fees for 200 baht a month for 600,000 poor families for three years.
NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said the subsidy would go to about 600,000 families or about 1.8 million people in 3,920 villages in remote areas from May 1, 2019, to April 30, 2022, to provide poor households with high-speed internet services.
The connection would give them government services including remote education and medical treatment, he said.
The NBTC would inform eligible people of the subsidy from Jan 16 to March 15 next year and they will have to confirm their subsidy acceptance. The NBTC would spend about 4 billion baht on the subsidy.
The project would have free wi-fi access points at communities, governmental organizations, schools, sub-district hospitals and public internet centers.
Besides, Mr Takorn said, the telecom regulator would spend about 19 billion baht on offering free internet services to governmental organizations for five years. (TNA)
