RATCHABURI, Nov 28 (TNA) — Naval divers started to comb the bed of the Mae Klong river in Ratchaburi province for World War II bombs to pave the way for the construction of a double-track railway there.
The seven-day survey takes place in the river’s section near Chulalongkorn and Thanarat railway bridges where the double-track railway was planned to cross the river.
Divers will be looking for the locations, numbers and types of explosives, if any. Findings will be reported for discussions with experts in the armed forces who will later carefully plan their retrieval for the sake of public safety.
Concerned authorities hope to finish the collection of WWII bombs there within this year.
The operation followed a request from the contractor of the double-track railway project.
The contractor met the Ratchaburi governor and cited some information indicating the possibility of WWII bombs being left on the riverbed where the substructures of the new railway line would be constructed. (TNA)
