PHAYAO, Nov 20 (TNA) – Tourists and birdwatchers flock to
a wildlife sanctuary in the northern province of Phayao for wild peacock
watching, a unique festival that is launched for a second year.
Peacock Conservation Club of Chun district organizes the 2nd
Green Peafowl Direct Count Festival at Pa Wiang Lor Wildlife Sanctuary to raise
public awareness of wildlife protection and promote local tourism.
Flocks of peacocks are sighted at about 20 spots in Phayao,
but according to officials the one at Pa Wiang Lor forest located in Huay Khao
Kum village has the highest number of the bright-coloured birds.
Chun District Chief Adul Phromwat said Pa Wiang Lor forest
was Thailand’s largest peacock habitat.
Besides bird watching, tourists could enjoy peacock-related
activities such as wild photography, painting contest and other cultural shows,
he said.
Phayao province has accommodated tourists to watch wild
peacocks during the mating season that lasts until January. Most of the birds have been drawn to corn
seeds, left on the ground by farmers during the harvest period.(TNA)
