BANGKOK, Nov 7 (TNA) – Thailand organizes the 4th Annual Counter-Terrorism Financing Summit intended to expand international cooperation against transnational terrorism and crime.
Opening the summit, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said the meeting was aimed at promoting regional exchange of financial information to prevent and suppress financial support for regional and international terrorist acts.
In the summit, he said Thailand focused on solutions to cope with the expanded networking of the Islamic State which was using social media to recruit supporters.
Besides, Thailand paid special attention to the abuse of digital assets to support crime, Mr Wissanu said. He cited the abuse of cryptocurrencies to do illicit businesses such as trade in narcotics and war weapons. The users of digital assets could conceal their real identities, he said.
Thailand was new to such matters and had to learn about them. Representatives of the Anti-Money Laundering Office were attending the summit on behalf of Thailand, Mr Wissanu said.
Representatives of the government and private sectors from 20 countries participated in the summit. (TNA)
