BANGKOK, Aug 14 (TNA) – Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has delegated his secretary-general to attend a crucial Constitutional Court hearing on Wednesday, as the court prepares to rule on a case that could potentially unseat him.
The case centers on whether Srettha violated ethical standards when he appointed Pichit Chuenban as a minister in his office, despite allegations that Pichit once convicted lacked necessary qualifications.
Srettha, who chaired a regular cabinet meeting on Tuesday, has assigned Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, the Prime Minister’s Secretary-General, to attend the court hearing on his behalf. The Prime Minister cited a full schedule at Government House for his absence.
When asked about contingency plans in case of an unfavorable ruling, Srettha stated he hadn’t considered any alternatives, saying, “I have my duties to perform.”
Wissanu Krea-ngam, an advisor to the Prime Minister, clarified that if the court rules against Srettha, he would have to step down immediately. In such a scenario, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai would assume the role of acting Prime Minister. – 819 (TNA)
