BANGKOK, Aug 16 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on
Friday chaired the Council of Economic Ministers’ meeting for the first time
after he has taken the leadership of the cabinet’s economic team in his second
term.
With ongoing trade wars and the current domestic economic
woes, Gen Prayut decided to head the Council, replacing Deputy Prime Minister
Somkid Jatusripitak under the previous government, after the formation of the
19-party coalition government.
In his address at the meeting, Gen Prayut underlined the
importance of the meeting in solving the economic woes and called on the
ministers to work hard to formulate and implement economic policies.
He noted that there were urgent measures and plans for
stimulate growth to be considered.
Taking the helm of the Council of Economic ministers is
viewed as Gen Prayut’s attempt to coordinate the work of ministers representing
different parties in the coalition.
It also shows how serious the challenges the government
faces are amid global economic slowdown, the US-China trade war and the ongoing
