CHON BURI, July 9 (TNA) – Nine elephants join Thai
Buddhists in making wax candles as offerings to temples at the start of
Buddhist Lent.
Nong Nooch Botanical Garden in Chon Buri province organized
daily religious rite to prepare nine wax candles from July 9 – 17.
Offering candles to temple is essential part of Buddhist
Lent or Khao Phansa, carrying the auspicious meaning of brightening the
future. Traditionally, Buddhist monks relied
on candles for light as they retreat to temples and monasteries for study and
meditation during the three-month Lent.
On Khao Phansa day which falls this year on July 17, the
nine candles will be delivered to nine temples in Chon Buri.
Candle making and carving have become culture festivity
celebrated across Thailand. Candle
parades and contests are common in communities on Khao Phansa Day, which also
marks the start of the rainy season.(TNA)
