BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) – Human trafficking is declining in Thailand thanks to the government’s efforts to suppress it and tasks to eliminate the issue will continue, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said.
Gen Prawit responded to the United States Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report 2019 which placed Thailand in its Tier 2 group of countries, which is the same group as categorized in last year’s report.
The Thai government had tried to solve the problem and made progress in it. As human trafficking continued to exist, efforts to solve it including decisive legal action would proceed, he said.
“I am not concerned about the upcoming end of the NCPO (National Council for Peace and Order) and remaining tasks to do because the new government can take them up, including solutions to human trafficking,” Gen Prawit said.
On June 20, at 9am Washington, D.C. time, the United States Department of State released the 2019 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, ranking Thailand at Tier 2 for the second consecutive year. The Thai government was recognized for its strong commitment to and continued progress in preventing and suppressing all forms of human trafficking during the past year.
Gen Prawit also assured that authorities would seriously regulate motorcycle taxi services in the wake of a recent clash between two rival taxi motorcyclist groups in Bangkok.
“I have ordered all parties to enforce laws. I warn people to obey laws while taking any action,” Gen Prawit said. (TNA)
