BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) — The Corrections Department conducted a ceremony to release royally pardoned inmates from five prisons and they included five leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).
Corrections director-general Narat Svetanan presided over the ceremony at the Bangkok Remand Prison this morning.
The ceremony concerned the release of inmates from the Bangkok Remand Prison, the Klong Prem Central Prison, the Central Women Correctional Institution, the Central Correctional Institution for Drug Addicts, and Corrections Hospital. On the occasion, 20 freed inmates were ordained as monks.
Mr Narat said that apart from the release some prisoners had their terms commuted thanks to the royal pardon from His Majesty the King, which benefited about 50,000 inmates nationwide. Corrections authorities had freed inmates make a vow to not repeat crime.
Meanwhile, he said, the society should give them chances.
Today PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang was released from Corrections Hospital.
Four other PAD leaders Phibhob Thongchai, Somkiat Pongpaiboon, Somsak Kosaisuk and Suriyasai Katasila were freed from the Bangkok Remand Prison. They were earlier sentenced to eight-month imprisonment for their previous seizure of Government House.
PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul remained in jail for security commission crime and he still has time to serve over other offences.. (TNA)
