CHAING MAI, March 14 (TNA) – Chiang Mai University has closed for two days until tomorrow and some airlines cancelled flights as haze crisis worsens in the northern region.
The particulate matter was measured at 123 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m) on average in the past 24-hour reading in Chiang Mai’s provincial seat, which almost doubled the safety standard.
However, the hourly air quality index reading by the network of Chiang Mai University recorded 300 µg/m or five times higher than the safety standard in some areas, particularly in Doi Saket and Mae Rim districts.
The Pollution Control Department reported the PM2.5 tiny particulate matter rose to unhealthy level in 14 areas in northern provinces.
Motorists are seen wearing masks amid low visibility. The situation has worsened despite the officials’ attempt to spray water on roads and residential areas, hoping to reduce the fine dust.
The hardest-hit zone in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district recorded the highest level of the dust particles for the fourth consecutive day at 199 µg/m³this morning.
Authorities and the private sector distribute masks for tourists and local residents to protect themselves. (TNA)
