TRANG, Nov 30 (TNA) – Blacktip reef sharks have returned
to Maya Bay in southern Thailand after the tourist spot made famous by
Hollywood hit “The Beach” has been closed indefinitely to the public.
Marine National Park Operation Center in the southern Trang province
has released video footage showing dozens of blacktip reef sharks swimming in
the Maya Bay.
The Bay has been closed to the public since June 1 this year
to allow natural rehabilitation and coral restoration after the marine
ecological condition had been degraded from tourist overcrowding.
The sighting for sharks brings great joy to conservationists
and marine park officers as it is a sign of revitalized ecological system.
Marine biologist Thon Thamrongnawasawat said in his Facebook
post that the number of blacktip reef sharks could exceed 50, possibly the
largest group in the country.
He also said it could be the largest habitat of blacktip
reef shark in the world.
Researchers have collected data and monitored their behavior
to compile a report, he added.
The predators are considered crucial to the eco-system
helping to control the amount and fish in coral reefs.
The closure of the Maya Bay to prevent heavy boat traffic
and tourists was initially planned from June 1 to September 30. But the Department of National Parks,
Wildlife and Plant Conservation decided to extend the closure indefinitely.
