KRABI, Dec 19 (TNA) – Thai marine park officials release
video footage of blacktip reef sharks in the Maya Bay, famous for Hollywood hit
“The Beach,” that has been closed for rehabilitation since June of last year.
Marine experts filmed the group of sharks on Tuesday while
they were entering the bay which is a part of marine national park in
Thailand’s southern Trang province.
Worapoj Lomlim, head of the marine national park, said the
sighting of the sharks showed the progress of natural rehabilitation and coral
restoration in the Maya Bay that had been carried out in the past one and a
half year.
Authorities decided to close the Maya Bay after marine
ecological condition had been degraded from tourist overcrowding. Under the current order, the Bay will remain
closed until May 2021.
Worapoj said there would be regular assessments and a
comprehensive inspection of the ecological condition before the Bay to be
reopened.
Marine biologists, researchers and park officials have
collected data and monitored marine animals.
Blacktip reef sharks are predators that are crucial to the eco-system.
