BANGKOK, June 3 (TNA) — The cabinet on Tuesday extended Cambodian, Lao and Myanmar workers’ stay and work to July 31 to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and solve problems about illegal workers and labor shortages.
Government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said the legal stay and work deadline for the migrant workers was extended from June 1 to July 31 for the sake of disease control, labor availability and economic support.
She said that the previous deadline fell on May 31 and relevant organizations including the Immigration Bureau and the Interior Ministry agreed with the longer stay and work permits.
The permission covers the Cambodian, Lao and Myanmar workers who have passports or equivalent documents and were imported under memorandums of understanding on labor imports. It also applies to the Cambodian and Myanmar workers who have border passes and were allowed to work in Thailand.
The cabinet reached the resolution also to prevent the risks of disease transmission from illegal migrants, Ms Narumon said.
The Interior Ministry would issue its announcement to implement the extended deadline, she said. (TNA)
