HONG KONG, Oct 24 (TNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister
Somkid Jatusripitak shows his support for Carrie Lam, chief executive of the
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, describing her as a respectable close
friend who faces unprecedented social conflict.
Somkid made the remarks on Thursday in his speech at an
international conference on the Greater Bay Area (GBA) in Hong Kong, which was
attended by Carrie Lam.
With similar experience in the past, Somkid said, Thailand
would always be Hong Kong’s true friend, standing with and giving moral
supports for Hong Kong people.
Lam said in her speech that her government would help young
people tap opportunities in the GBA covering Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
The SAR planned to assist young people in starting up their
businesses with financial support, counselling and access to fund.
Lam also stressed the principle of “one country, two
systems” that had allowed economic opportunities, promising that Hong Kong
would continue to maintain its own economic and legal system, internationalized
business environment and a high degree of autonomy.
Deputy Prime Minister Somkid has led economic ministers in
the current roadshow to China and Hong Kong since October 20, focusing mainly
on the cooperation with the GBA.
He has met senior officials of the Chinese Communist Party
and executives of Chinese firms including those of Huawei, Quantum Hi-Tech and
Midea Group.
His main focus is to promote cooperation between Thailand’s
Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and China’s GBA.
The EEC and Guangdong signed a memorandum of understanding
during the trip.(TNA)
