BANGKOK, Sept 6 (TNA) – Dow Chemical Co and Siam Cement Group (SCG) are implementing a project to recycle 200,000 tons of plastic waste a year.
Dow Chemical chief executive officer Jim Fitterling said Thailand discharged about 1 million tons of plastic waste into the sea annually and the project was aimed to handle 200,000 tons of the waste on a yearly basis.
According to him, it will start to recycle 20,000 tons of plastic waste annually and then its capacity will gradually be expanded to reach the 200,000-ton goal.
Both companies will implement technologies and mechanical recycling techniques to turn plastic waste into plastic pellets, plastic products and petrochemical raw materials among other outcomes.
SCG president Roongrote Rangsiyopash said the study of the recycling project would be concluded within this year.
Dow Chemical and SCG were also the founding members of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) that included financial institutions, government and private organizations and economic development and environmental agencies, Mr Roongrote said. (TNA)
