BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Gen.Tanasak Patimapragon has expressed disappointment over a US 2014 report on human rights violations in Thailand, saying that the Foreign Affairs Ministry is preparing to clarify the issue to the US embassy in Thailand.
Gen. Tanasak said that the US 2014 annual report on Thailand contained mixed reactions and most of the issues occurred in the previous government before the current administration took over the country.
He said his ministry had frequently presented factual incidents to Washington and also invited the US government representatives to inspect operations launched by Thai authorities. The US government never responded and instead used reports issued by the media and non-governmental organisations in attacking Thailand.
“The Foreign Affairs Ministry has drafted a letter which will be sent to the US embassy in Thailand, expressing the kingdom disappointment . It will reiterate that the government will follow the roadmap in order to build strong and democratic system. It’ll also ask the report issuing country whether the assessment is just,” said Gen. Tanasak.
The Washington administration urged the current Thai government to restore democracy soon after the military toppled the elected government in the bloodless coup on May 22, 2014.
Touching on 14 students who have been arrested in Bangkok since last Friday over charges of staging a protest against the ruling junta in defiance of a ban on public demonstrations, Gen. Tanasak said Thailand now enjoyed democracy more than the past as the country is now more safe and peaceful.
Looking at Thailand without prejudice, foreign countries would understand Thailand better and know more what the government is doing for the country, Gen. Tanasak added. (TNA)
