BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA)- Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is attending an upcoming summit in Tokyo, where leaders of Mekong countries and Japan are expected to adopt a new development strategy and review their cooperation to reduce intraregional disparities.
General Prayuth and is his counterparts from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam are expected to adopt the “New Tokyo Strategy 2015” at the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit hosted in the Japanese capital from July 2-4.
The Thai Prime Minister will also pay a courtesy call on the Japanese emperor and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Thai Foreign Minister General Tanasak Pattimapragorn, who is also a Deputy Prime Minister, said on Tuesday that Thailand and the CLMV countries are attending the Summit as strategic development partners of Japan, to promote further cooperation in the areas of trade, culture, society, and water resource management, among other issues.
Meanwhile, General Tanasak said he would be meeting with the Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and the Thai business community in Japan to discuss several bilateral issues including cooperation in railway construction and imports of overdue farm products like Mangoes.
He added that Thailand would use this opportunity to hold trilateral talks on development of Myanmar’s flagship Dawei Deep-sea Port between Thailand, Japan and Myanmar, focusing on sustainable economic development in the area for the benefit of local livelihoods.
Other priorities listed for the trilateral meeting include talks on promoting regional infrastructure that would provide efficient and seamless connectivity, as well as challenges that could impact regional economic development like disasters.
A new Memorandum of Intent (MOI) on these issues would be signed between the three parties wrapping up the meeting. (TNA)
