CHIANG MAI, Feb 4 (TNA) – Five hundred dancers showcased Lanna nail dance as this northern province of Chiang Mai is set to feature record-breaking nail dance with 20,000 participants for 729th anniversary during the Thai New Year celebration in April.
Nail dance, a unique dance of the Lanna people, has been used to perform in celebrations on important occasions for a long time.
A recent performance of a Lanna-style nail dance by 500 dancers at Ho Kham Luang Pavilion in Royal Park Rajapruek, Chiang Mai, highlighted the city’s rich cultural heritage. This footage will be used to promote Chiang Mai’s 729th anniversary during Songkran, which will feature a record-breaking nail dance with nearly 20,000 participants.
Waranya Lertworakijphiphat, President of the Chiang Mai Women’s Association, said that we have set a target of 19,901 people around the city’s inner moat. Every road will be filled with dancers. It will be the most beautiful day in Chiang Mai in 729 years.
This historic event welcomes everyone who loves Lanna culture—Chiang Mai locals and visitors of all ages and nationalities—to join the nail dance and break the world record together.
All dancers will receive a pink sash with a rose pattern as a souvenir during a good time to visit Chiang Mai as well.
In the old days, the dance was performed to welcome the royal visit to Chiang Mai. Northern nobles, both men and women, used to dance at auspicious events and welcome guests, said Yotsawee Wanitphutthikul, a male dancer who participated in the dance.
Even our weaving of cloth, each piece of cotton, each line of silk, everyone started producing. This time, 20,000 pieces, the economy is moving, said Rawirat Khuhiranyarat, a member of the Chiang Mai Women’s Association.
This year’s Songkran celebration in Chiang Mai, coinciding with the city’s 729th anniversary, featured a nail dance performance aimed at setting a new world record. Beyond this goal, the event showcased the nail dance, a treasured Lanna art form, promoting this valuable cultural heritage to a global audience. This cultural charm is expected to further attract international visitors to Chiang Mai. -819 (TNA)
