BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) – Police placed shipping containers outside Government House and set up security checkpoints to cope with an anti-government rally planned in the afternoon.
Shipping containers were fixed tightly on road surface in the morning. Some of them were on Chamai Maruchet Bridge on Phitsanulok Road opposite Government House. Traffic police and police from the local Nang Lerng station were managing traffic flows in the vicinity.
Pol Lt Gen Pakapong Pongpetra, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said shipping containers were placed to block demonstrators from approaching Government House to minimize confrontation between police and protesters and thus avoid their arrest.
The Bangkok police chief did not elaborate on the number of riot police prepared to handle protesters today. He said the rally might be peaceful and intelligence did not point to any possibility of a violent incident. However, he said, there were enough police to ensure order. (TNA)
