Bangkok, Aug 13 (TNA) – The Thai government through the Foreign Ministry will donate US$50,000 or about 1.5 million baht to help victims of the huge blast in Beirut.
Cherdkiat Atthakor, director-general of the Information Department and spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, said the financial aid was for Lebanon to help people affected by the blast on Aug 4 when about 200 people were killed, about 6,000 were injured and properties were widely damaged.
As a friendly nation, Thailand would hand the financial aid through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to support humanitarian assistance projects for affected people, he said.
The Thai embassy in Riyadh which also supervises Thai foreign affairs in Lebanon regularly contacts the acting honorary consul of Thailand in Beirut and a network of Thai people in Lebanon.
Mr Cherdkiat said the embassy learned that two Thai people were slightly injured and the rooms and properties of some Thai people were damaged in the blast. The embassy is arranging for a repatriation flight for Thai people who want to return from Lebanon. (TNA)
