CHIANG MAI, March 18 (TNA) – This week, residents of Chiang Mai are once again facing toxic dust that has blanketed the entire city. This morning, the city was ranked the 7th most polluted city in the world.
Chiang Mai has been engulfed in toxic dust for several days. Residents report experiencing increased eye and nasal irritation, as well as coughing, especially those with allergies and vulnerable groups.
PM2.5 levels measured at 9:00 AM reached a high of 263 micrograms per cubic meter at Ban Pang Phueng School. According to a report from the IQAir website at 10:00 AM, Chiang Mai was ranked the 7th most polluted major city in the world.
Chiang Mai Province has declared the PM2.5 situation today as “red,” indicating levels exceeding health standards. The highest concentration of dust was recorded in Chiang Dao District. The main cause is forest fires in steep terrain, which are difficult to extinguish, along with wind carrying smog from neighboring countries into Chiang Mai city.
It is expected that this situation will persist until the Songkran festival. Pulmonary and respiratory specialists are warning the public, especially high-risk groups, to wear masks that can filter PM2.5, keep doors and windows tightly closed, and avoid outdoor activities.
