BANGKOK, Feb 25 (TNA) – The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Chalermchai Sri-on insists Khao Kheow Zoo meets international standards for ‘Moo Deng’s’ care, countering PETA’s accusations of exploitation and habitat deprivation.
PETA, an animal rights organization, accuses Khao Kheow Open Zoo of exploiting animals like “Moo Deng” for profit, not genuine conservation. They argue the zoo’s captive breeding deprives animals of their natural habitats and experiences.
The minister emphasized that the Khao Kheow Zoo Director, responsible for Moo Deng’s care, has clarified all points.
He affirmed that Moo Deng is cared for according to all principles of wildlife care, including animal welfare, with regular checks on habitat and health. Furthermore, there is no animal cruelty within the zoos under the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand.
Moo Deng’s mother has had seven offspring. While pygmy hippos are indeed an endangered species, Thailand has successfully bred them in large numbers, demonstrating excellent animal care.
Currently, many organizations wish to help confirm Moo Deng’s welfare, to prevent Thai zoos from losing credibility and impacting tourism.
