PHUKET, Nov 8 (TNA) – The majestic Italian sailing ship, Amerigo Vespucci, has captivated the hearts of locals and tourists alike during its current visit to Phuket from Nov 6 to 10.
Renowned as one of the most beautiful sailing vessels in the world, the ship has been docked at Phuket Deep Sea Port, allowing visitors to marvel at its timeless elegance.
Built over a century ago, the Amerigo Vespucci is a classic sailing ship that bears a striking resemblance to the vessels of a British naval commander Lord Nelson’s era.
With a displacement of around 3,500-3,800 tons and a draft of approximately 8 meters, this magnificent vessel has circumnavigated the globe several times.
The ship is equipped with three masts, with the fore and main masts primarily used for propulsion. The mizzen mast, or the third mast, serves as a rudder to steer the ship. Historically, the Amerigo Vespucci was armed with hundreds of cannons, but these have since been replaced.
The ship’s interior is a testament to Italian craftsmanship and cultural heritage, with intricate designs and ornate decorations adorning every corner.
After its stay in Phuket, the Amerigo Vespucci is scheduled to set sail for Mumbai, India, followed by stops in Arab countries before returning to Italy via the Mediterranean Sea in April next year, said Captain Giuseppe Lai of the Amerigo Vespucci.
While the ship is primarily powered by sails, it also has a modern engine for use in confined waters or when maneuvering in ports. -819 (TNA)
