CHIANG MAI, Feb 14 (TNA) – Chiang Mai’s Muang district has been shrouded in toxic haze as the city was ranked third on Iqair’s list of most polluted city in the world on Tuesday morning.
The levels of ultra fine particulate matter PM 2.5 rose to 63-66 microgrammes per cubic metre in Sri Phum and Chang Phueak sub-districts.
The highest level was measured at 195 microgrammes per cubic metre in Chiang Dao district.
Forest fires in the Ob Luang National Park in Hot district continue at 20 spots and the PM 2.5 level remained high at 179 microgrammes per cubic metre this morning, prompting local authorities to spray water to increase moisture in residential areas.
Officials will seek permission from Chiang Mai governor to use two additional helicopters of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department to support the operation to put out the flames.
Forest fires also occurred in Phayao province, where the PM 2.5 levels have surpassed 100 microgrammes per cubic metre for three consecutive days.
The latest PM 2.5 reading was 172 microgrammes per cubic metre. The province issued a burn ban, put into force since Feb 1. (TNA)
