BANGKOK, Oct 6 (TNA) – About 3,000 police officers will be deployed to provide security at the expected mass rally on Oct 14 as many pro-democracy groups plan to stage a demonstration to mark the Oct 1973 uprising.
The Free People group and the United Front for Thammasat and Demonstration announced to gather at the Democracy Monument. However, Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief, Jirapat Phumchit said the police have not been officially informed by the protesters to hold the demonstration as required by the Public Assembly Act.
In the meantime, the metropolitan police bureau has prepared to deploy 3,000 police officers and more reinforcement from provincial police to cope with the protest, depending on the number of demonstrators.
Checkpoints will be set up to make sure no illegal items are brought into the rally site. Health officials will be stationed to measure body temperature of participants, entering the area.
It is still unknown if the protest will prolong for several days as announced by protest leaders.
The police are ready to provide security throughout the rally and will facilitate traffic to reduce any impacts on motorists. (TNA)
