SUKHOTHAI, Aug 24 (TNA) – The flood situation in Sukhothai province has extended to cover wider areas as part of a flood prevention wall collapsed, causing water overflowing into a riverside community.
Ban Nong Wong riverside community in Sawankhalok district has been hit by the deluge after five metres of the flood protection embankment was eroded by the strong current of swollen Yom River.
Most houses are one- story wooden houses at risk of collapse, so rescue workers helped evacuate children and the elderly to safe areas.
Local residents said the current flood was the worst since the devastating floods in 2011.
The Yom River has overflowed its banks into local communities on the western side of the river since Sunday.
Although the water level slightly dropped on Monday morning, the overall situation remains critical. Villagers are forced to wade through floodwater to buy food at the market. (TNA)
