BANGKOK, Dec 23 (TNA) – The Department of Highways offers special services to travelers on 10 main highways that 8.3 million vehicles will use during the New Year festival.
Apisit Promasen, deputy director-general of the department, said the department stopped construction work on the 10 main highways that stretched on a combined distance of about 1,400 kilometers. Special lanes were added and alternative routes were recommended to facilitate traffic on the highways, he said.
Besides, the department improved facilities including lighting and traffic signs at 53 accident-prone locations on 43 highways to boost road safety, Mr Apisit said.
In addition, about 500 highways offices will function as rest areas, serve refreshments and accommodate travelers. About 40 highways offices in popular tourist provinces also arranged for campsites free of charge, he said.
Mr Apisit predicted that 8.3 million vehicles would use the 10 main highways during the seven-day New Year holiday and the traffic would rise by 4% from the previous New Year festival. (TNA)
