BANGKOK, Dec 2 (TNA) — The Ministry of Transport has come up with road safety and traffic facilitation measures for the New Year holiday.
Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob on Monday launched a campaign for the readiness of people and vehicles for New Year vacations.
The campaign included checkpoints to provide free vehicle checks and test the readiness of motorists. The Land Transport Department and the Office of the Vocational Education Commission take part in the campaign in which checkpoints will be set up nationwide for the purpose.
Mr Saksayam said the department was responsible for checking the conditions of passenger buses and their drivers during New Year holiday when roads would be more prone to accidents due to heavy traffic.
Free vehicular checkups by the department will be available on Dec 1-31 at about 2,300 service centers nationwide.
The transport minister also said that the drivers of public transport vehicles would be tested and their vehicles be checked for their service readiness at checkpoints around the clock. Substandard drivers and vehicles would be suspended.
The Office of the Vocational Education Commission will provide vehicle checks at 259 checkpoints along main highways. Drinking water, cooling wipes and massage will be also available free of charge there.
Chirute Visalachitra, director-general of the Land Transport Department, said his staff would strictly supervise the speeds of public transport vehicles via GPS around the clock, check drivers’ service hours and test them for blood alcohol content. (TNA)
