BANGKOK, OCt 26 (TNA) – The Foreign Trade Department will look into the details about US opposition to Thailand’s decision to ban use of three toxic farm chemicals, said Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanavisit.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) had sent a letter to the Thai government, asking the latter to review its decision to ban the three chemical substances, especially the glyphosate.
The letter by the USDA expressed worries over the implementation of Thailand’s ban on glyphosate that would affect the country’s imports of agricultural commodities such as soybeans and wheats.
The commerce minister said the issue was forwarded to the Foreign Trade Department. It needed time to consider any possible impacts.
The ban, approved by the National Hazardous Substances Committee upgraded the three farm chemicals to Type 4 toxic substances, which prohibits their production, import, export or possession. It will be put into effect on Dec 1. (TNA)
