BANGKOK, Feb 19 (TNA) — Thailand and Hungary will exchange their knowledge about rivers and water management and Thailand expects to apply Hungarian know-how to benefit countries along the Mekong River.
Deputy Prime Minister Chatchai Sarikulya revealed the bilateral intention after visiting Hungary on Feb 14-16.
He said Hungary was internationally recognized for water conservation and international water management.
During his visit, both sides shared their interest in cross-border water management and flood, drought and wastewater solutions. The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) would work out a memorandum of understanding with Hungary to realize the cooperation, Gen Chatchai said.
“Hungary plays important roles in water management. It houses the Danube Commission Secretariat and pushed for the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region that governs the international management of the Danube River which stretches 2,845 kilometers long through 10 countries. It emphasizes the equal shares of water consumption,” the deputy prime minister said.
ONWR secretary-general Somkiat Prajamwong said Thailand was interested in solutions to sediment in large rivers in Thailand and the Mekong river basin. Hungary had a good plan on the management of the international Danube River and Thailand expected to apply the plan to the Mekong River, he said. (TNA)
