BANGKOK, Dec 20 (TNA) – The National Water Resources Committee chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha approved a 20-year master plan for comprehensive water management of the country.
Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the Office of National Water Resources, and Thongplew Kongjun, director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department, said the master plan covered six areas of work to be carried out in two decades.
It covers tap water production for all villages, secure water supply for agriculture and industries, urban flood drainage, water conservation, the rehabilitation of catchment areas and international cooperation on water resources.
Besides, the committee approved two big water management projects. One estimated at 9.80 billion baht is for a flood drainage tunnel under the Prem Prachakorn canal in Bangkok. The implementation will start next year and the project will enhance flood drainage in Don Muang, Laksi, Sai Mai and Bang Khen districts of the capital.
The other project worth 2.85 billion baht is for the improvement of the Yom-Nan canal in Sukhothai province for flood drainage and water reserves. The implementation was set from 2019 to 2022. The improved canal will benefit 7,300 rai of land. (TNA)
