BANGKOK, Jan 14 (TNA) – Thai authorities will impose urgent
measures to curb with pollution as hazardous dust particles in Bangkok and
surrounding provinces continue to threaten people’s health.
Fine dust particles PM2.5 have exceeded safe level of 50
micrograms per cubic meter in many areas in Bangkok for many days. High levels of PM2.5 have been reported in
inner parts of Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom province.
The Environment Office of Bangkok Metropolitan
Administration called a meeting with related agencies including traffic police,
Land Transportation Department and Pollution Control Department on Monday.
Chatri Watanakajon, head of BMA’s environment office, said a
collaborative effort would be carried out to tackle pollution in the greater
Bangkok area which had affected people health.
The amount of PM2.5 rose to an alarming level in Din Daeng
and Bang Khun Thian districts Monday morning.
Air quality in 17 other districts also worsened with PM2.5 just under 50
micrograms per cubic meter.
Over the past few days, the BMA has cleaned roads and
sprayed water in the air to curb dust.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who was on a working trip
to Chiang Mai expressed concerns over the air pollution.
He said he instructed every agency to take necessary steps
to prevent dust from harming people as well as inform residents on how to
protect themselves.
Prayut urged people to heed warnings and follow health
instructions.
He said urgent measures had been in place such as artificial
rain-making would be proceeded when conditions permitted.
The Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation Department
have been readied to rain over high-risk urban area.
Operators of construction site must prevent dust from
spreading, added Prayut. (TNA)
