BANGKOK, Nov 29 (TNA) Bangkok motorcyclists face tougher
penalties for driving on footpaths after various incidents causing injuries to
pedestrians and triggering public outrage.
The fine for violating regulation now doubled up from Bt500
to Bt1,000, said Sakhonthi Phattiyakul, Deputy Bangkok Governor.
The decision came two days after the latest accident in
which a motorcyclist hit and injured a schoolgirl on a sidewalk in Lad Phrao
area. To avoid traffic jam, some
motorcyclists rely on sidewalk ignoring safety of pedestrians.
Admitting law enforcement failure in the past, Sakhonthi
said more officers had been assigned to enforce the law and strictly penalize
violators, especially during rush hours.
The city administration also asked for cooperation from
thousands of taxi motorcyclists to obey the law, he said.
Bangkok city has since July collected over Bt3.3 million
fines from traffic regulation violators as it beefs up road regulation
enforcement.(TNA)
