BANGKOK, Nov 22 (TNA) – Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) calls a meeting with political parties to explain the regulation of nominating candidates for the upcoming election next year.
It is the fourth time EC has held the meeting with political parties this year in preparation for the upcoming polls tentatively set for February 24, 2019.
EC Chairman Ittiporn Boonprakong said 67 political parties and 13 groups attended the Thursdays’ meeting to clarify legal issues, learn about instructions related to political movements and fielding their candidates in compliance with the Constitution and related organic laws.
The 13 political groups are those who have filed their political party applications with the EC but their applications are still pending.
Party leaders and representatives, representatives of potential parties, election administrators and members of the news media were briefed to have correct understanding of political regulations in the lead up to general elections.
Some political parties voiced concerns over the delay in drawing up new constituencies required by laws, calling the EC to speed up the process so that they can make necessary preparations.
For the first time, the next election will be held under the new Constitution which was promulgated last year.
EC officials demonstrated to the participants how to field House of Representatives’ candidates in accordance with the 2017 Political Party Act.(TNA)
