TAK, July 21 (TNA) – More migrants from Myanmar have been
caught trying to illegally enter Thailand in hope of finding jobs as the border
has been sealed off to prevent the risk of imported COVID-19 cases.
Thailand has closed its borders to almost all international
arrivals as the country has gone 57 days without a case of local coronavirus
transmission.
To prevent a potential virus spreader among illegal
migrants, local officers including those in Mae Sot, Tak, have stepped up their
fight. Immigration officers and border
patrol unit on Tuesday intercepted an attempt to transport two migrant from
Myanmar on a pickup truck.
The driver, a 50-year-old Thai woman, told police that she
was hired by an agent to take the two Myanmar nationals to Tak city, some 80
kilometers from the border.
As Thailand is reopening the businesses and economic
activities, the government is expected to allow workers from Cambodia, Myanmar
and Laos to reenter the country legally under a tight health screening.
