BANGKOK, Jan 13 (TNA) – Thai women’s volleyball coach, Danai Sriwacharamaytakul announced his resignation after Thailand women’s volleyball team had missed out a chance to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Thailand lost to South Korea in three straight sets (22-25, 20-25, 20-25) in the final of the Asian Olympic qualification event at Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday.
After defeating Thailand, South Korea, the winning team has gained an Olympic berth to join qualifiers from Europe, Africa, South America and North America. Japan have automatically qualified as Olympic hosts.
Danai said South Korea’s team had been well-prepared and played very well in attacking, outside hitting and serve reception performance.
“Thai players did their best but we have to accept the defeat and carry on trying to advance to the Olympics once in the future,” the coach said.
“We apologize for any mistake today and I apologize that I could not lead the team to the Olympics this time. I take responsibility by resigning from my position to allow a new person to do the job”, he noted.
Wilavan Apinyapong, 35 said tearfully that there were always a winner and a loser in all sporting events. She thanked her team and praised everyone for doing their best although they could not win the game.
Wilavan has planned to retire at the end of this year but she said the Thailand Volleyball Association may need her to play in more sporting events. (TNA)
