BANGKOK, Dec 16 (TNA) – Growing online scams prompt Thai
law enforcement agencies to hold a public seminar to raise awareness against
fraudulent schemes.
Officials and investigators from the Department of Special
Investigation (DSI) and consumer protection agencies joined the seminar on
Monday.
The threat of internet scamming is growing more serious in
Thailand as perpetrators exploiting sophisticated technologies, they warned.
Criminals using social media to lure people into investment
schemes had been on the rise, said Dechawat Chaeng-chuen of the Office of the
Consumer Protection Board.
Most of the victims were lured into bogus investment schemes
and, therefore, were not protected by consumer protection laws, he said.
The Office had received a number of complaints from people
who were invited to invest in investment scams, but most of the cases were not
prosecutable offenses under consumer protection law, he said.
Since these cases were not about trading in goods and
service, people must not fall into advertisement of unreasonable high yields,
added Dechawat.
DSI official Piyasiri Watanawarangul said the DSI had
compiled information and advisories for the public in order to prevent inline
scams and internet-related fraudulent activity.(TNA)
