BANGKOK, Dec 13 (TNA) — The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has included “Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage” in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Nuad Thai is Thailand’s second cultural heritage to receive the listing after its “Khon, masked dance drama in Thailand” was listed last year.
The committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) made the decision during its 14th session in Bogota, Colombia, on Dec 12 local time. The committee’s session was set for Dec 8-14.
Nuad Thai is defined as part of traditional Thai healthcare. Practitioners apply it to balance patients’ body, energy and structure to treat illnesses and promote health. It was believed that Nuad Thai originated from massage healers who treated pain of farmers after hard work in their fields in former times. (TNA)
