TRAT, Sept 10 (TNA) – Thai and Cambodian officials met on Wednesday to advance plans for restoring peace on their shared border.
The special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, held one month after a ceasefire, addressed key issues including military disarmament, mine clearance, and a crackdown on online scams.
Acting Thai Defence Minister Gen. Natthaphon Nakphanich stressed that since the two countries cannot move away from each other, it is vital they resolve issues peacefully to allow their people to return to normal life.
The GBC agreed on five points. First, both nations will withdraw heavy weapons from the border. Second, a joint working group will be established to clear landmines. Third, a task force will be formed to combat online scams, with Thailand providing Cambodia with the locations of over 60 scam centers. Fourth, a special committee will resolve territorial disputes, starting with the Nong Chan village area. Finally, the Regional Border Committee (RBC) will explore reopening border crossings for business.
A follow-up meeting will be held in Thailand within the next 30 days to review progress. -819 (TNA)
