BANGKOK, Dec 9 (TNA) — Security authorities plan to extend the imposition of the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations in southern border provinces for three more months while Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon ordered tight security measures during the New Year festival.
Gen Somsak Rungsita, secretary-general of the National Security Council, said the government’s committee on emergency situations acknowledged reports on continuous terror attacks in some areas of the far South. The incidents were declining in number and local people were receiving protection from authorities who were simultaneously implementing development projects to restore regional peace.
“The meeting agreed to propose the cabinet extend the imposition of the emergency situation administration in three southern border provinces except Mae Lan district of Pattani, Betong district of Yala, and Sungai Kolok, Sukhirin and Sri Sakhon districts of Narathiwat for three more months, from Dec 20 to March 19, 2020,” he said.
“It is the 58th extension to facilitate authorities’ operations to prevent and cope with terror attacks and to boost security for local residents and their property. Besides, the meeting agreed to enhance efficiency in investigation into security cases in southern border provinces,” the NSC secretary-general said.
In the meeting, Gen Prawit ordered the southern outpost of the Internal Security Operations Command, soldiers, police and administrators to carefully protect local residents, properties and themselves. Efforts must be intensified to prevent untoward incidents during the New Year festival of Thai Buddhists, Gen Somsak said. (TNA)
