BANGKOK, Nov 18 (TNA) – The Marine Department has planned to develop ten major piers along the Chao Phraya River to be tourism landmarks, connecting Bangkok’s railway network.
Witthaya Yamuang, the Director-General of the Marine Department said that travelling by boat in the capital and surrounding provinces is constantly growing due to heavy road traffic.
Chao Phraya express boats records about 50,000 daily passengers and Klong Saen Saep boat service transports 20,000 commuters a day.
The number of local passengers and tourists grows about 10 per cent each year, he said.
Six piers, which will be developed as transit links to the city’s electric trains are Phra Nang Klao, Rama VII, Bang Phom, Rachinee, Marine Department, and Sathorn piers. The work will be completed within next year while the marine department pier is due to be completed first next year.
Three piers, namely Tha Chang, Tha Tien, Wat Chetupon will be upgraded to serve tourists around Rattakosin Island historical quarter.
The department will regulate private piers at shopping landmarks such as Yodpiman, Lhong 1919, Icon Siam and Asiatique to ensure safety and convenience for passengers. (TNA)
