BANGKOK, Oct 14 (TNA) — Representatives of key national organizations and relatives of Oct 14, 1973 uprising heroes remembered people killed in the Thai popular uprising and called for the conservation and development of democracy in the country.
Buddhist, Christian and Islamic ceremonies were organized at the October 14 Memorial at Khok Wua intersection to remember people killed in the uprising against the government of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn. Representatives of the government, the opposition and the parliament and the relatives of dead uprising heroes attended the event.
Representing the prime minister, Natthachai Sriroongsukpinit, adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office Minister, said the uprising showed the power of the students and people who valued democracy as the key to national development.
The uprising inspired public participation that was fundamental to democracy, he said.
Representing the House Speaker, Democrat Party MP Ong-art Klampaibul said Oct 14 uprising heroes would be remembered and the uprising was a good lesson for those in power and people in general and underlined the importance of constitutional monarchy.
Ladawan Wongsiwong, deputy leader of the opposition-core Pheu Thai Party, also shared praises for Oct 14 uprising heroes. Besides, she called for amendments to the constitution that she said would ensure fair benefits for all Thai citizens.
Any government that did not heed people’s need had proved its failure to develop the economy and win recognition, she said. (TNA)
