BANGKOK, Oct 11 (TNA) — Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha did not make any comment after the Chinese embassy in Bangkok has condemned Thai politician for showing support to Hong Kong activists.
Reporters sought his reaction on the Chinese embassy in Bangkok’s statement blaming “a Thai politician” for supporting protesters in Hong Kong and raising concern about bilateral relations.
Gen Prayut said briefly that “It’s the matter of Hong Kong,” before leaving reporters to his office.
Government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said the prime minister did not make a reaction because the Chinese embassy did not mention the government and reporters’ questions on the issue should go to the concerned politician.
“The Thai government and China remain in good ties. The issue is sensitive and the Thai government will not express its stance on the issue because the (Chinese embassy’s) statement did not refer to the government. It is a personal matter,” Ms Narumon said.
The embassy statement, posted on its official Facebook page late on Thursday, came days after Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong posted a picture on social media with Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit.
Apparently referring to Mr Thanathorn, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said the politician would have to face consequences, no matter he acted on his own behalf or his party’s.
He said the government was not involved with the matter and he believed the issue would not have any impact the relations between the two countries. (TNA)
